Biography & Background
Julie Somers is the niece of Eric Somers, former UWF, MBC and AWA wrestler. Julie made regular appearances alongside her fraternal twin brother Howie in MBC when they were teenagers and Eric wrestled there, so she was exposed to the business at an early age. She wanted to become a pro wrestler, too, and learned the basics from Sarah Sharpe, who worked as a manager at the time. Julie made her pro wrestling debut at the age of 18, focusing mainly on independent promotions where her brother also competed. At the age of 19, she and Howie debuted in MBC as the masked tag team called The Chromosomes. They competed under the masks for many months, winning the MBC tag team championship, and was unmasked on the final MBC show.
She and Howie pursued wrestling opportunities on the independent scene, sticking mostly to the New England Wrestling Association based out of Massachusetts, that promoted smaller shows in the New England area. Because intergender wrestling had been limited to cult promotions, Julie now focused on singles wrestling and had a run of success.
Her brother got a call from Sarah Sharpe, now working in the AWA front office as a talent scout, inquiring about Howie's availability for the tag team division. Howie settled with Daniel Harper as his tag team partner and Julie agreed to become their manager, but secretly longed for the opportunity to wrestle again.
After seeing Miyuki Ozaki challenge anyone to a match at Rising Sun Showdown 2, Julie wasn't sure what to make of it. She didn't think much about responding, but watched as Melissa Cannon did and put on a show fans wouldn't forget. After seeing Melissa plead for the AWA to finally launch a women's division, Julie knew what she had to do, and push for the same, especially because of her desire to prove she can represent the next generation of wrestlers.
Since the AWA officially launched its women's division, Julie has made her mark. She earned the right to face Charisma Knight at SuperClash VII and avenged an earlier loss, pinning the bigger and more experienced wrestler, and formed a tag team with Melissa Cannon who was largely popular with the fanbase.
Her opportunity to become the first ever AWA Women's champion saw her get a late entry into the first women's Rumble match, but after she eliminated Erica Toughill, Julie was eliminated when Erica pulled down the top rope. That led to a heated rivalry, in which Erica assaulted a number of women out of anger over her perception that Julie had earned her laurels because promoters liked her more.
After Erica injured one of Julie's mentors, "Lady Lightning" Lori Wilson, Julie agreed to face Erica on her terms. At SuperClash VIII, the two met in a falls count anywhere match, in which Julie overcame a lot of punishment and pulled out a victory, finishing off Erica after a moonsault off the stage.
Since SuperClash VIII, Julie has formed a friendship and partnership with Victoria June, then a friendship with actress Gal Gadot, that led to the her and June teaming up at Memorial Day Mayhem, with Gadot in their corner. They came out with a win, but now, with Julie having been among the many who made her stand against Kuriyami, the question is whether Julie will be the one to rise to the occasion and focus again on the ultimate prize, the AWA Women's title.
