Victoria June

She has what would be described as "cute features." Victoria June is a nearly albino light Afro-American woman with a big strawberry blonde Troll doll-like afro, green eyes, a gap-toothed grin and a face full of freckles. The only way the features work is for her to lean into the Afropunk aesthetic. Proudly weird, her appearance would make Erykah Badu consider her 'unusual.'

Victoria June is that weirdo in the back of the class. The kid that everybody shunned because she didn’t fit into any one category. Ally Sheedy’s character in the Breakfast Club would have wondered what was wrong with her. Her background is pedestrian. She is the daughter of a humble a Southern working man from the little town of Humbolt half way between the gritty city of Memphis and the bright lights of Nashville. Her father promoted concerts, worked in renovation and maintained a city job during his 9 to 5. Her mother worked as a librarian by day and a waitress at night to make ends meet.

It was a hard life and Victoria followed a similar path: studying dance, making candles, being a barrista at a coffee shop and helping out with her father’s businesses. She would haul sacks of cement and lumber on weekends, put up concert flyers after school and anything else her family needed her to do. But a naturally blonde Black girl with freckles and damn near albino skin isn’t the most common sight in a town like Humbolt. Victoria June never really did fit in. She was called names like ‘freak’ and ‘weirdo’ and ‘ghost’. Those are still trigger words for her. Through her father’s promoting in Atlanta she became aware of the Afro Punk movement and enthralled by the culture. It gave her a place she felt comfortable in her skin and a place she express herself.

Her father’s promotional work also took her to the Memphis where he was helping promote the wrestling scene. There she caught the bug. Originally gangly, all legs and arms and sloppy moves, Victoria’s wrestling style could be described as someone trying to wrestle sacks of cement into submission. But, she still caught the eye of Mantha Rage in Toronto who contacted her about training in their Age of Rage Wrestling school after seeing the self-proclaimed “Little Weirdo” on a youtube link the youngster put online. Victoria, liking the Rage family history, packed up her bags and moved to Toronto where she became the promotion’s ace and champion, popular for her mixed style of punk rock looks, improving wrestling and incongruous country attitude. Only in Canada, obviously. Why not?

The high energy guitar of the Ramone's anthemic "Blitzkrieg Bop" energises the crowd as Victoria June shoots up on to the stage in an explosion of smoke and clap of pyrotechnics. She is dressed in a leather vest, dashiki-printed leotard, skin-tight torn up Daisy Duke jean shorts, torn fishnet stockings, Doc Marten boots and oversized Kurt Cobain sunglasses. She jumps around the stage for a bit before she bounds down the aisle, throwing herself against the fans and whirling and stomping like a crazy woman on her way to the ring. She rolls into the ring and jumps up onto the middle ropes shouting and waving at the crowd to get them pumped up. The freckle-faced near albino hops down off the turnbuckles, pulling off her round sunglasses and tossing them to the ringside attendant. She runs her hands through her bushy strawberry blonde afro, hyping up the crowd as she messes up the already unruly mass of hair. "Hey ho! Let's go! It's about to be on!" she screams in her Tennessee accent as she moshes and headbangs around the ring.
